Rafting on White Water Article published in June 2012 issue of Active Education.
Since the Stone Age, humans have been exploring rivers, lakes, and oceans, and the crafts our forefathers developed to navigate waterways reflect the unique requirements of their local environments. The modern canoe is believed to have originated around 8,000 years ago, while the rubber river raft was invented in the early 1840s by US Army lieutenant John Fremont and Horace H. Day to survey the Rocky Mountains and Great Plains of the United States.

According to researchers from Assignment Writing Services UK John MacGregor published A Thousand Miles in The Roy Rob Canoe in 1886, which was a huge success in Europe and coincided with the Industrial Revolution. With increased leisure time in the mid-nineteenth century, Europeans began to appreciate floating down rivers in various contraptions, taking in the natural world; an activity previously reserved for a select few. The first commercial whitewater trip did not occur until the turn of the twentieth century. Initially, surplus military rafts were used as boats; inflatable rafts were introduced much later.

Private rafting companies have been instrumental in the global expansion of the rafting industry over the years. In 1956, John D. Rockefeller, a member of one of America's wealthiest business families, built a resort that featured one of the country's first floating trips. It elicited, however, only a lukewarm response. Later in the 1960s and 1970s, exclusive whitewater rafting companies grew in popularity, laying the groundwork for today's rafting industry.

Rafting made its Olympic debut at the 1972 Munich Olympics. It was later included in the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. In 1996, the Ocoee River in Tennessee Valley hosted the Summer Olympic Games' whitewater events.

101 Introduction to Rafting

At its most basic level, river rafting entails paddling boats or inflatable rafts and steering them down a river through swirling waters. Typically, rapids are classified from one to six based on their water conditions. These grades indicate an increase in the level of difficulty and intensity as the numbers increase. Rapids classified as '1' are primarily recommended for children and beginners, while those classified as '5' are considered dangerous and are not suitable for recreational rafting.

Over the last 60 years, as rafting has grown in popularity as a recreational activity, numerous advancements in equipment and safety standards have occurred. Today's raft designs come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and in some locations, they are not required to be paddled or rowed, as motorised rafts are available. Another popular type of raft is the hybrid, which includes both oars and paddles. This enables passengers to share the tasks of paddling and acrobatics.

Rafting is generally supervised by a qualified professional guide, and passengers must always adhere to their instructions strictly. To minimise risks on the river, Australia requires all passengers to wear a personal flotation device (PFD), a helmet, and closed-toe shoes. Protective clothing (such as wetsuits, booties, and cags) may also be worn, depending on the weather. Rafting is an exhilarating outdoor sport, and there is no reason why beginners should be excluded from the thrills of river rafting.

There are numerous wild and scenic rivers to discover throughout Australia. The Tully River in Queensland and the Franklin River in Tasmania are two of the most popular rafting destinations in the world. Penrith Whitewater Stadium, which was used during the Sydney Olympic Games, is located in Sydney, while Western Australia, Victoria, and the Northern Territory all have rivers of exceptional beauty steeped in colourful local and natural history.

The peak season for the majority of Australian rivers is early spring to summer. While the majority of rafting trips are one-day affairs, multi-day excursions are the preferred methodoperatoriencing a river. Each rafting operator has its own pricing policy and trip duration, so interested teachers should consult the organization's website for specific information. Additionally, the majority of establishments offer discounts for large group reservations.

Why are you rafting?

Rafting is a great activity for getting kids off the couch and away from technology. Rafting will get them up and moving, out into nature, breathing fresh air, connecting with one another, appreciating their surroundings' natural beauty, and having the time of their lives. River environs elicit an indefinable sense of mystery in both students and adults.

Rafting has a number of additional benefits as an outdoor education activity:

Put six students in a boat and ask them to paddle together with the common goal of safely and deftly navigating a river. Rafting requires teamwork, develops bonds, and fosters strong group feelings; all in a completely natural and organic way that the havingents are unaware of because they are having so much fun and are so elated by the adventure. Additionally, leadership abilities tend to emerge naturally when confronted with whitewater rafting challenges.

Students who would otherwise be indifferent to environmental issues may develop a strong desire to protect and preserve that area as a result of their positive outdoor experience. Students take environmental issues much more personally and seriously after completing a wilderness journey and rafting down a beautiful river. They see the consequences and dangers associated with pollution, development, and other issues. Additionally, issues concerning water, such as dams and flood control, become much more personal. The primary advantage of whitewater rafting is the opportunity to get outside and into nature.

While students can participate in an easy Grade 1 rafting trip down a gentle river, a Grade 3 or 4 experience presents a significant physical challenge. Rafters must cooperate to move the boat. Additionally, they must maintain their balance and remain inside the boat. It's a total body experience, and after they've completed a difficult section of river or rapids, their entire body feels it.

Bonding experience: One of the most enjoyable aspects of whitewater rafting is the shared experience. Whether you're spending a pleasant afternoon with your classmates or embarking on a strenuous week-long journey, it's always a pleasurable experience. Rafting also requires teamwork, as students are not only travelling together, but also collaborating to move the boat in the direction they desire.

Apart from the physical challenges associated with whitewater rafting, a serious expedition presents a mental challenge as well. Students may examine maps in advance of trips and believe they will never be able to accomplish that. Alternatively, they may study a rapid and conclude that it is impossible to complete. Then, with a little perseverance and determination, thetremendousthe obstacle, gaining a tremendous sense of accomplishment and confidence. For some, this feeling pervades everyday life and gives them the confidence to confront life's complexities.

Research has established the psychosocial benefits of wilderness river rafting trips. Students, regardless of circumstance, have an unparalleled opportunity to transform their self- and environment-perceptions through a river experience. With strong teacher and raft guide leadership, a river trip can ideally take the form of an interpretive journey that introduces youth to the histories and mysteries of their inner and outer worlds.
